I was a web developer for 15 years before specialising in accessibility. I am now a freelance accessibility consultant and auditor. I provide WCAG consultancy and audits in the UK and US (and anywhere else when I get the chance), and concentrate especially on ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance.
As a freelancer, I have conducted audits for, and provided accessibility consultancy to, numerous companies and organisations in both the public and private sectors, over the last several years. Prior to that, in 2016, I worked for AbilityNet in London for 12 months, doing audits and consultancy for 2 global banks, 2 US law firms, a telecoms company, a travel airline, telecoms company, university and many other companies and organisations.
I believe the biggest hurdle we still have to overcome is to make our industry better known. All the time I see businesses wanting to make their website accessible think, "Call in a developer". No, the developers are the ones who made it inaccessible, they aren't the solution!
We need to let the business world know there is an accessibility industry! Professionals who can help them achieve real accessibility, not just a few vague ideas from a misinformed developer.
